Limiting Enrollment in Honors Classes

Motivating high performing students that may take joy in underperforming on a test, like STAR, that doesn't affect them can be done somewhat gently.

Requiring that any student who wants to take an Honors or AP class during the next school year meet Proficient (or Basic) levels on either relevant or all STAR tests would motivate many students to at least try to do well.

Logistics

Step 1

At the start of the school year, the district provide teachers of Honors or AP classes the STAR scores of students in their classes.

Step 2

Teacher either ignores STAR or drops student from class.  This allows some flexibility in response.
